Luke's gospel is the first of a two part account of the ministry of Jesus - firstly on earth and then after his crucifixion and resurrection, in the Book of Acts, through some of his followers, most especially Peter and Paul. Luke himself was a gentile doctor and a travelling companion of the apostle Paul. He was clearly an educated man and did careful historical research using a variety of sources including Mark's gospel which he abridges in some places and expands in others. Mary, the mother of Jesus is certainly another. Archaeologists have commented on his proven accuracy in the book of Acts.
Luke's is a chronological life of Christ with a number of special emphases. He stresses human sinfulness and the blessing of forgiveness. He has much to say about prayer. He mentions Jesus' teaching on poverty and money. He has a special interest in outsiders - women, the Samaritans and the poor.
